Little book review of 'The long way to a small, angry planet' by Becky Chambers.
A pleasant read - but never lived up to the glimpses of greatness I wished it would reach. I guess the title said it all - as that's exactly what happened but I felt it was missing some depth.
The good things, the characters are fab and the setting is well thought out - using aliens to view our present day prejudices is fun and makes the inter species stuff more believable.
I also enjoyed that the story was told from different points of view rather than one central character.
My dissatisfaction is that I felt at the end it was just a collections of short stories that never built to a final epic meaningful story. There certainly seems to be hints that this might come out from people's back stories and speculation about the planet they were travelling to but there was no drawing of strands together. In the end it was like tuning into a soap opera - enjoyable but not mind blowing (I know I have high expectations).
So I enjoyed and will probably read the follow up but I wasn't riveted and would defiantly think twice before recommending to others.
